“I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest.”
Calvary On Mission in Guatemala
Calvary Baptist Church, Dothan, AL was our first team to have serving here in Guatemala this year. It was a blessing to serve alongside of them for a week. The first two days were spent in Guatemala City working in schools and churches. We met wonderful leaders and teachers that are working hard for the good of their communities and the church.
After our work in the city, we traveled to Patzún, Chimaltenango, to serve the school and church in this community. Patzún is a beautiful place, located about two and a half hours away from the city. It is filled with amazing views: mountains, people dressed up with colorful Guatemalan typical customs, and beautiful children with big black eyes, dark hair, and a huge smile full of joy and hope that was transmitted in every hug they shared with us.
Building Relationships and Sharing God’s Word
The team had a variety of tasks to complete during the week. From repairing the church’s floor, to training school teachers in meaningful ways for improving classroom dynamics, to performing puppet shows for the children. Most importantly, the team engaged in daily home visits, building relationships and spending quality time praying for and sharing God’s word with families.
One team member shared, “It is amazing to see the Holy Spirit work when we take a few minutes to be intentional with someone. This can have a huge impact in someone’s life and even in ours.” It’s so wonderful to see the work being done by the local church. These pastoral leaders have limited resources, yet they are able to do more than they could imagine because their hearts are open before the Lord.
Another team member said, “Everyone needs to hear the gospel. The fields are white for harvest. I am challenged to reach out to all people because I want no one to perish. He saved me from a world of sin and I must share that saving grace.”
A Welcoming and Loving Experience
For many team members it was their first experience on a cross-cultural mission trip. On the last night we reflected on all that God had accomplished in us and through us. Many emotions and tears where shared, but the team found a common feeling about their time serving the people of Guatemala. All agreed that they felt out of their comfort zone, yet they felt welcomed and loved by the people.
One team member exclaimed, “The kids and adults have so much love and joy! This was my first trip so I was very overwhelmed, but more than that I was blessed and encouraged by the amount of love that was shown. Several of the girls drew pictures for me to take home…I will always cherish them. The people are truly beautiful inside and out!”
It was a joy seeing both the team and the local church together obeying God, honoring Him before others, and loving one another by our words and actions. It’s clear that children are being loved, the gospel is being proclaimed both in word and deed, the love of God is being manifested, and His Word is being engraved on people’s hearts.
Reflecting on their week of work in Guatemala, a team member summed it up in the following words, “The week was full of activities, full of meeting wonderful people, full of loving children, full of seeing God at work, and full of thanksgiving for the privilege of serving Him.” Thank you Calvary for partnering with both Chosen People and Elim Baptist Church.
